Effective January 1, 1973, Recorder's Court of Chatham County shall be abolished,
and Recorder's Court of the City of Savannah shall thereupon succeed, replace and
have the jurisdiction, powers and duties formerly possessed by Recorder's Court of
Chatham County, as well as the jurisdiction, powers and duties of Recorder's Court
of the City of Savannah, and its name shall be The Recorder's Court of Chatham County.
The Commissioners and ex officio judges of Chatham County shall be authorized to adopt
such portions of the "Uniform Act Regulating Traffic on Highways," approved January
11, 1954 (Ga. L. 1953, Nov.-Dec. Sess., p. 556) [O.C.G.A. § 40-6-1 et seq.], as now
or hereafter amended, as county traffic ordinances, as said Commissioners and ex-officio
judges may deem appropriate as traffic ordinances for said County, and The Recorder's
Court of Chatham County shall have jurisdiction to hear and determine cases involving
violations of any such ordinances so adopted. The penalties provided by any such ordinances
so adopted shall not exceed the penalties set forth in said "Uniform Act Regulating
Traffic on Highways." The territorial jurisdiction of The Recorder's Court of Chatham
County shall include only the territory embraced within the corporate limits of the
City of Savannah and the unincorporated area of Chatham County, but the governing
bodies of other municipalities of Chatham County may, by resolution, abolish their
respective Mayor's Courts and permit the Judge of said Court to hear and determine
cases involving violations of their respective municipal ordinances. The term of office
of the Judge of the said Court is hereby extended to January 1, 1975. The successor
to said Judge shall be elected at the general election of 1974 and shall take office
on January 1, 1975, for a term of four years and until his successor is elected and
qualified. Thereafter, successors shall be elected at the general election immediately
preceding the expiration of the term of office and shall take office on the first
day of January immediately following such election for a term of four years and until
a successor is elected and qualified. The governing authorities of the City of Savannah
and Chatham County are authorized to adopt ordinances providing for the appointment
of one or more associate judges.
