§ 3-206. Commissioner for the poor.

  • Any other provision of law to the contrary notwithstanding, there is hereby created a department of the government of the City of Savannah which shall be headed by a department head known as the Commissioner for the Poor. Such Commissioner shall be appointed by the governing authority of the City of Savannah and shall serve at the pleasure of the governing authority. The Commissioner for the Poor shall receive a salary to be fixed by the governing authority of the city at a salary level reasonably consistent with the salary of other city department heads. The duties and responsibilities of the Commissioner for the Poor shall include the following:

    (1)

    Defining and locating indigent and poor people who reside in the City of Savannah;

    (2)

    Providing aid, assistance and education of the poor and indigent in ways which are consistent with improving their quality of life.
